The silicon wafer used in most PV panels is generally either poly-crystalline or mono-crystalline and typically provides a panel sunlight conversion efficiency in the region of 16% and a panel output of +250Wp (watts peak).
Higher performing solar panels are available from Sunpower who manufacturer a range of high performance monocrystalline panels which, due to their patented Maxeon Technology, achieve panel efficiencies of 20-21% and outputs of 345Wp.
The light striking the panels creates DC electricity. The DC electricity generated by the panels is converted to usable AC electricity by an inverter. There are two types of inverter; ones with a transformer and those that are transformerless. Modern types of high frequency and transformerless inverters offer efficiencies in excess of 94% and as high as 97%. Most manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty as standard which can be extended to 20 years at additional cost.
The AC electricity generated is recorded by a Generation Meter and your FiT payments are based on the meter reading taken from this device.
Solar PV arrays are ideally orientated to the south, although as illustrated below they will work effectively in orientations from east through to west with only a nominal reduction in efficiency.
Installation of PV comprise the follow key steps:
